Stack 4: Resilience

Gartner says 60% of supply chain disruptions will be resolved without humans by 2031. Yours won’t be — unless you map it first.

Reduce fragility so one shock doesn’t break the business.

A new Gartner forecast predicts that within five years, the majority of supply chain disruptions will be identified and resolved automatically — no human intervention required. AI-powered systems will detect delays, reroute shipments, trigger backup suppliers, and adjust schedules before anyone picks up the phone.

That sounds like the future. And for most SMEs, it is — because automated resolution requires something most small and mid-size businesses don’t have: a mapped, digitized supply chain.

What this means for your operations

If your supply chain exists as a set of relationships in someone’s head, a folder of contracts, and a few phone numbers, there’s nothing for any system to resolve. Automated or not.

The companies that will benefit from this technology are the ones that already know:

That’s not AI. That’s a map. And most businesses don’t have one.

The Gartner prediction isn’t really about automation. It’s about the widening gap between businesses that have operational visibility into their supply chain and businesses that don’t. The first group will keep getting faster and more resilient. The second group will keep making phone calls during a crisis, hoping someone answers.

The tactic

Build a one-page supplier dependency map.

Not a full supply chain audit. Not a consulting project. One page.

  1. List your top 10 suppliers by spend or by criticality (some low-spend suppliers are mission-critical).
  2. For each one, note:
    • What they supply
    • Where they’re located (city/country)
    • Whether you have a qualified alternative
    • What happens if they can’t deliver for 4 weeks
  3. Mark the ones where the answer to “do we have an alternative?” is “no” or “not sure.”

Those are your single points of failure. You don’t need to fix them all today. You need to see them. Because the next disruption — and there will be one — will find the ones you haven’t mapped.

The free tool

The Supplier Dependency Map Template gives you the structure: 10 rows, the right columns, and a simple risk rating. Fill it in, and you’ve got a resilience baseline that’s better than what most businesses twice your size have. This finds the gap. The Modern Ops Program closes it.
